8 Easy Ways to Get Rid of Clutter

Are you feeling overwhelmed with bits and bobs around your home? Drowning under the clutter that appears from nowhere to make your home feel heavy? If so, our team at Allsorts Sorted have some excellent tips to restore order and restore the visual noise in your home. The key is to keep it simple and focus on the small gains. Not only do these tips make your home feel lighter, it will make any recurring service clean easier for our team!

1. Set a 10-Minute Timer in One Space

Setting a timer encourages you to say focused and prevent overthinking. Choose one space to focus on and try not to avoid moving out of the zone for the timers duration.

2. Use 4 Categories for Sorting

The easiest method to decluttering is using the box method, with for main categories that help to make decisions easy and painfree.

  • Keep – things that stay in that same area

  • Toss – things that can be thrown out or recycled

  • Donate – things that can be given away

  • Relocate – things that need to be moved to another area in the home.

3. Clear Surfaces First

Surfaces can make the biggest visual impact when you walk into a space. Counters and tables make easy ‘dumping grounds’ which leads to untidy and cluttered areas. Take some time to clear the space and give it a wipe.

4. The ‘Touch Items Once’ Theory

Use this idea to discipline yourself into not putting items down, instead of away. When you pick up an item, decide there and then what to do with it, and then place it in it’s home.

5. Start With the Easy Items

Build momentum by starting with items that don’t require an emotional decision or second-guess. This can include trash, broken items, expired products, and packaging.

6. Keep a Donation Basket Handy

Designate one basket or bin for donations and keep it accessible. When it’s full, take it to your favorite donation spot right away.

7. Practice One-In, One-Out

This simple rule helps to stop building up collections of unused items! If you’ve brought something into your home, it’s time to decide one other item that leaves.

8. Use a Maybe Box

If deciding in the moment isn’t always easy, put them in a ‘maybe box’. We suggest either reviewing the previous item each time you add something new, or adding a date to reopen the box. If you haven’t thought about the items in there by that date, you can easily make steps to donate, recycle, or give the item to someone else.

Removing clutter is not an easy or quick task. These few tips can help encourage and motivate you to slowly make a difference and feel the lightness of less. Our team are always ready to help with the clean up work!
