Our Top Tips for Making Hosting Easier and Cleaner

There is nothing quite like gathering your favourite people around the table for a night of food, drinks, and great conversation. However, the anticipation of hosting can sometimes feel more like a chore than a pleasure. If the thought of the pre-party deep clean and the post-party mountain of dishes is holding you back from inviting people over, we’re here to help.

Hosting doesn't have to mean exhausting yourself. With a bit of smart planning and a few clever cleaning hacks, you can keep your home sparkling and actually enjoy your own party.

Here are our top tips for taking the work out of entertaining:

1. Focus Only on the "Impact Zones"

Do not waste your energy scrubbing the spare bedroom or organising your pantry before guests arrive. Close the doors to the rooms that won't be used and focus entirely on the spaces your guests will actually see: the entryway, the kitchen, the living room, and the guest bathroom. A quick vacuum of the floors and a wipe-down of these main surfaces is all it takes to make your home feel fresh and welcoming.

2. The Empty Dishwasher Trick

This is the ultimate golden rule of stress-free hosting. Before your first guest rings the doorbell, make sure your dishwasher is completely empty and your sink is clear. As the night progresses, you can load dirty plates, glasses, and platters directly into the machine instead of letting them pile up on the countertop. It keeps your kitchen looking tidy during the event and saves you from facing a disaster zone at midnight.

3. Set Up a Self-Serve Drink Station

Playing bartender all night means you’re constantly mixing drinks, wiping up spills, and moving back and forth to the fridge. Instead, set up a dedicated beverage station away from the main cooking area. Stock a large bucket or cooler with ice, drinks, and glassware, and leave a microfibre cloth nearby. Guests love the independence of helping themselves, and it keeps party traffic out of your busy kitchen workspace.

4. Give the Bathroom a "Quick-Refresh" Kit

You don't need to do a full bathroom overhaul right before guests arrive, but a 5-minute refresh works wonders. Put out fresh hand towels, clear any clutter off the vanity, and ensure there is plenty of toilet paper in plain sight. We recommend lighting a scented candle or use a reed diffuser in the bathroom about an hour before people arrive. A pleasant scent instantly gives the impression of a deeply clean space.

5. Embrace the "Trash & Recycle" System

Make it incredibly easy for your guests to clean up after themselves. Place a recycling bin and a rubbish bin in an obvious, accessible spot near the food and drinks. When people know exactly where to put their empty cans, napkins, and bottle caps, your countertops stay clear, and your end-of-night cleanup time is cut in half.

6. The Coaster and "Spill Kit" Strategy

Accidents happen when people are having fun, but a red wine or sauce spill doesn’t have to ruin your night (or your rug). Stash a "spill kit", including a microfibre cloth and a bottle of carpet or upholstery spot-cleaner, hidden away but easily accessible in the room where you're entertaining. Dealing with a spill immediately takes two seconds, whereas letting it sit until the next morning means a stubborn stain.

We also recommend scattering plenty of coasters on coffee tables and side tables ahead of time. It subtly prompts guests to set their drinks down safely and protects your wooden furniture from water rings.

7. Choose a Low-Mess Menu

If you want to keep your kitchen clean and your stress levels low, leave the complicated, multi-pan recipes for another time. Opt for grazing platters, slow-cooker meals, or a classic backyard barbecue. These options require less active cooking while your guests are there, generate far fewer dirty dishes, and allow you to stay present in the conversation.

Want to Host Without the Hassle?

The absolute easiest way to enjoy hosting is to let someone else handle the dirty work. Imagine welcoming your friends into a professionally cleaned home, and knowing you don't have to lift a finger to get it that way.
