Simple Cleaning Habits Anyone Can Implement

Cleaning might not be the most fun task, but we can make it easier for ourselves. Having routines and habits can make staying on top of your home actually manageable. Finding out what works for you and your home takes time. Especially when motivation and energy ebbs and flow. Here are our top five cleaning habits so easy anyone can try them out.

Implementing the ‘One Touch Rule’

This idea comes from the cleaning-as-you-go method, however it feels easier to follow! The concept is once you use or “touch” an item, you shouldn’t have to touch it a second time to put it away later. For example, after brushing your hair, you put it back in the cupboard instead of leaving it on your vanity. Or, after coming home, you place your coat on the rack instead of the back of a chair.

Daily Laundry

We highly recommend implementing a daily laundry schedule. Each day you’re either doing the wash, ironing, or putting it away into the wardrobe or drawers. When laundry is left to pile up it feels infinitely more overwhelming and draining. Keeping loads smaller (and using effective cycles) will minimise the work and save your weekends from a weeks worth of laundry!

Clean Before Food Preparation

One simple way to transform food preparation and your kitchen is to ensure the space is cleaned before use. This means emptying the dishwasher if it is clean, washing up the dishes, and clearing the benchtop. The entire food preparation experience will feel smoother with a fresh space and available sink or dishwasher to load in utensils once used. Getting into the simple habit of cleaning up after dinner, rather than leaving it as a surprise at bedtime, can make your home feel cleaner and more organised.

Limit to One Room Only

When cleaning it is easy to move from one room to an other, ending up distracted by something else and not finishing the original task. We recommend putting any stray objects into a pile, rather than taking it back to it’s home in the moment. Once the room is cleaned and tidy, then you can put all those piled items into their original spots. This approach can also be great for structuring your week with the focus on one room per day!
